Here are some things to check on any email that is asking you to make a payment, whether it is with a vendor you already use or someone unknown to you.
* Review the actual email address, not just the sender’s name. If it looks off or unprofessional, check further.
* Watch for email addresses that don't match the vendor. We get reminders for payment from Netflix, Comcast, Geeksquad, our bank (and banks we don't do business with) and many more. But 90% of the time the sending email is a gmail account. No large company would use a gmail account for collections. They always will use their own. Fun fact: the remaining 10% is often shared by Hotmail, Outlook, AOL and Yahoo emails, or are sent from an unrelated business (think www.johnshouseofwidgets.com trying to collect on a Comcast bill).
* On a side note, business owners should always use an email with their own domain in it.
* Check for spelling and grammar errors in the text.
* Cross-reference the info. Log into your account at the company’s website or call its official number — not the number on the email.
* Never provide your payment info if you didn't initiate a purchase.
* A legit business will never ask you to pay immediately with a bank account number, prepaid credit card, digital wallet app or money wire, especially if it’s your first notice!
